note: i think i’ll use this blog type format to review/recommend stuff from time to time
so a few weeks ago i picked up some korean hip hop cd’s since i was already getting the new Drunken Tiger album. i figured i should do some catching up on the artists that i enjoy. one of the disc’s that i’ve found myself spinning almost as much as the new DT, is Lexy’s last album.
now the problem that i have with a lot of korean hip hop cd’s is the fact that maybe half the album really adheres to the genre. this was very much true of Lexy’s first album which about half of was R&B and ballad type song’s. now, i had found Lexy from the featuring verses she had done with 1TYM and Jinusean, and expected about as much from a YG artist. in the end they’ve got to sell records, and the R&B or ballad type song’s are what’s going to move records, and those are often the singles that push sales. the second album she put out was even more R&B and ballads and very little hip hop. which to me was a shame because Lexy can really spit when she’s allowed. (the same goes for Tasha in Movement family)
even so, i took a chance picking up the 3rd album, and was pleasantly surprised. instead of going in the same direction she had been going in, instead she leans more toward the dance side of things. the result is more or less a dance/hip hop album. it’s also a pretty short album clocking in around 36 minutes or so. there’s lots of catchy stuff hearkening back to Lexy’s first hit “Girls” which was very much a dance track.
what was interesting to me (and maybe only me) was how well it was all put together. upon inspecting the liner notes it became rather clear. Perry (YG producer extraordinaire) was responsible for production on just about every track, and not only production but also the writing! now i don’t have the liner notes for the first 2 albums (as they were acquired through rather dubious means), but if taking Lexy out of the creation process insomuch as far as writing/production goes, and thats not to say she didn’t have any input (just going by the small amounts of english in the liner notes that i can read) means a better album, then i hope they continue in this direction with future albums.
so if you’ve got 12 bucks burning a hole in your pocket, go pick it up
